Welcome to Mrs. Renn’s First Grade Class!
My Goal
First Grade is a very exciting year. It is a year that is filled with an enormous amount of growth and new learning. My goal for students is to develop a love for learning that will stay with them for a lifetime. I also want every student to feel respected and that they are a valued member of our classroom family. It is my belief that when the classroom environment is a warm and welcoming place where every individual is respected and valued, students are able to reach their greatest potential.
This website is designed to keep parents and students informed of classroom procedures as well what’s happening monthly in our classroom. Please see the weekly newsletter that comes home on Mondays for more detailed information regarding lesson skills and objectives.
Please feel free to email me at [email protected].
Homework Procedure- Homework is sent home Monday- Thursday. Homework is usually 1-2 pages and reflects skills recently learned. Homework at this grade level should take your child approximately 10 minutes. Homework is given to not only practice skills, but to help set study routines. Each night have your child check their folder for their homework. Have them complete the work then replace it back into their folder to be check the next day. This DAILY routine will go a long way towards developing good study habits for success in the upper grades. In addition to the homework given daily, your child should be making reading every evening a goal. Books are available on Raz-Kids at every child’s reading level. In addition to Raz-Kids, the school district has purchased a subscription to IXL Math for your child to also use at home. Your child is expected to practice math skills using this program. A report of how many minutes your child spends on these sites as well as their quiz results are available to me in order to check their progress. Let me know immediately if you are having any difficulty with their use.
Spelling- My spelling is an individualized spelling program. Students have been tested on the district Must Spell spelling list for grades K-30. I have identified words from that list that your child needs to learn. Each Monday you child will bring home a list of their very own words to practice. Please help your child learn these words in the best method for him/her. On Monday we all write our words 3times each. Continue to practice throughout the week. Some families use magnetic letters and have their child spell their words on the refrigerator. Try keeping their list in the car and practice spelling them orally as you drive. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays. These words are important to your child’s success. If your child misses a word it will reappear on the next spelling list until it is mastered. There will be periodic review weeks where all words learned so far are tested for long term mastery. Spelling lists will not be given out on short weeks.
Snack Time
Snack time is designed to give your child that extra energy boot needed to finish the day successfully. With that in mind, please provide your child with a healthy snack that does not require too much time to eat or clean up. We will have snack during the afternoon each day. Crackers, pretzels, or a piece of fruit are good choices. They can be eaten while we continue to work if needed. Pudding cups and fruit cups can be hard for students to open and eat without making a mess of their classwork.
